May Day Celebration

Seminole County Public Schools Student Museum

301 W. Seventh Street,  Sanford | 407-936-1679

FREE ADMISSION  – Download a Flyer (PDF)

May Day, a day of festivities and a dance around a Maypole to welcome spring, has been celebrated for centuries.  This tradition was carried out in many of our Seminole County schools in the 1940’s and 50’s.  Many of Sanford’s native residents remember such festivities at the Sanford Grammar School, now the Seminole County Public Schools Student Museum.

At the Museum you’ll see performances by many of our local Seminole County Public School students.  Last year Midway Elementary School’s talented young musicians and dancers reenacted the historic dance around the Maypole.  There will be garden tours, plant sales and food available.  During the day, tour guides from the Master Gardeners Program will give tours through the teaching gardens at the museum.

If you attended last year’s tour, you’ll again be amazed at the beautiful new gardens along with the many new additions to the Student Museum, such as the Crooms Memorabilia Exhibit and the Global Village room.

Please visit our website at www.scps.k12.fl.us/studentmuseum and go to the Inside the Museum page to see all of the exhibits and rooms that are at the Museum.

Ninth Annual Sanford’s Historic Buildings & Architecture

Student Art Contest – Winners

Press Release – Dec. 10, 2010

The purpose of the art contest is to develop a permanent art library of Sanford’s historic buildings as a way to:

  • Enrich the community
  • Promote the city’s history
  • Foster the development of local art students.

The contest is open to any art student residing in Seminole County.  Entries may be in any medium but the subject matter has to be themed around an historic building within the city limits of Sanford.

The contest is divided into two divisions: Senior and Junior.  The  Senior Division is for high school & college and Junior Division is for middle school. Over  85 entries were received this year.

Prizes: First Place – $100 – $150, 2nd Place – $50 – $100, 3rd Place – $25 – $50.  The higher amounts in each category go to the Senior Division.  Entries that receive prize money become property of the Trust.  Other submitted entries are returned to the artist by the end of the school year. A selection of art (20 pieces) is exhibited at various locations around Seminole County during the next two months.  The pieces will be on display here at the Wayne Densch for the rest of December, and then in January at the Wachovia Bldg in downtown Sanford.

Winners were announced Friday, December 10th at the Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center during the “Sights & Sounds of the Season” and in conjunction with Sanford’s numerous Holiday events.

Senior Division:

First Place: Ariel Rivera

First Place: Ariel Rivera

First Place:  Ariel Rivera, for her watercolor titled, “Blue House.”

Ariel Rivera is a senior art student at Lake Brantley HS. She enjoys working with watercolor and mixed media. Ariel hopes to go to Rollins College in the fall of 2011 to study international business and studio art.  Ms. Katy Farmer is her teacher.

Second Place:  Mikey Zeffield is an art and photography senior at Lake Brantley HS. Ms. Susan Brown is his teacher.  Last year he also entered a b/w photo image that received honorable mention.  This year’s piece titled, “Eye Spy” earns second place.  Mikey’s pieces tend to be provocative, but underneath he has an easy-going nature.  Mikey plans to attend Full Sail University for a degree in Digital Art + Design.  Unfortunately, he could not be at the award ceremony due to previous photographic commitments.

Third Place: Cara Clifton has earned third place for an excellent watercolor titled, “Those Were the Days.”  She has lived in Florida all her life with her parents and two older sisters. Ever since Cara was little she remembered trips  with her father to Sanford and Lake Monroe. The historic buildings and it’s past have always been fascinating to her and have influenced many of her art pieces. Cara is “sweet sixteen” old and a junior at Lyman High School. Ms. Lisa Smith is her teacher. Next to painting and drawing, she loves to run and play the piano (but not at the same time!)

Honorable Mention: Sol Chavez was born in Argentina but grew up in Orlando, Florida. He is seventeen years old and currently attends Lyman HS where Ms. Lisa Smith is his teacher. Sol lives with his parents and three siblings. His favorite pastime is painting and creating new and different pieces. Sanford houses, architecture, and people have inspired him to create this piece.

Honorable Mention: Heidi Rossow for her mixed media piece “Main Street”.  She is a junior at Hagerty HS, where Ms. Tess Valone is her teacher.

Heidi has been drawing since she was a young child – it has always been her hobby. Heidi credits her extremely creative family for always encouraging her in art! Heidi belongs to the National Art Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society and plays Varsity Volleyball. She is taking Honors Portfolio class this year and will enroll in Advanced Placement Studio Art next year. Heidi is interested in interior design and architecture as a career.

Honorable Mention: Morgan Trent is an Advanced Placement Art student and president of the National Art Honor Society at Lake Brantley High School. Ms. Katy Farmer is her teacher. Morgan entered our contest last year and  placed second. Both entries have had an essence of “whimsy” about them. She hopes to attend Ringling College of Art + Design in the fall of 2011.

Junior Division:

First Place: Daniel Mecca

First Place: Daniel Mecca

First Place: Daniel Mecca, Markham Woods MS, Grade 7, Ms Rebecca Gilmartin, teacher; Medium: pencil, “Untitled” for the Queen Anne at 618 Palmetto Ave. built in 1900. When Daniel  first started art, I was about 2 years old and  some of the first things I liked to draw were trains, and animals.  These drawings became more advanced over the years, as he learned to shade and draw details in these items.  When Daniel grows up, he would like to pursue a career in art, and become an architect.  We believe he maybe well on his way!

Second Place: Holli Hochberger for her watercolor and pencil piece titled, “400 Magnolia”. Holli is a 15yr old freshman in the Health Services Academy at Seminole High School and takes her art classes at Greenwood Lakes MS where DeeLee Stevens is her teacher.   After high school, Holli plans to attend college and specialize in the Large Animal Veterinary Health field.

Holli lives with her mother in Sanford and volunteers at Freedom Ride Stables helping disadvantaged children learn to ride horses and also at the Seminole County SPCA and Pet Rescue by Judy.  Holli is also a member of the recently formed Pet Rescue Club at Seminole High School.

Holli spends her free time reading, art, scrapbooking, Horseback riding,, softball, and has played the Violin.  Before moving from the Midwest to Florida 2 ½ years ago she competed in Downhill Snow skiing.  She plans to be Confirmed in 2011 at Nativity Catholic Church in Longwood.  Next summer Holli plans to travel to France and Spain with her French instructor and fellow students.

Third Place:  Yui Takahashi for her untitled collage using watercolor and photographs.  She is an eighth grader at Markham Woods MS where Ms. Rebecca Gilmartin is her teacher.  Yui is from Hyogo on the big island of Japan.  She has been interested in the arts since she was very young.  Yui likes learning the arts by studying paintings and sculptures by great artists.  Also, Yui  has been playing piano for more than 10 years, and has won competitions. In the future, she would like to practice hard to become a good piano teacher, and continue arts as my favorite hobby.

Honorable Mention: Rachel  Marie Bogden for her mixed media piece, titled, “130 Maple.” Rachel is an eighth grader at Greenwood Lakes MS where DeeLee Stevens is her teacher. Rachel has always had a great love of the arts and considers herself “artsy” by using art to express herself in a big way. Her favorite artist is Claude  Monet. Her other subject of interest is history – the big story on the grand scale – world history.   We can also think that writing may be one of her other talents if you had seen the bio we received. Rachel is also interested in antiques and may want to own an antique shop some day! Right now she has aspirations to be in some aspect of the fashion world or be a psychiatrist – the world is her oyster!

Honorable Mention: Claire Graham, Markham Woods MS; Medium: collage of watercolor and photographs. Claire hopes to go to college out of state and become a doctor. She wants to move away from Florida, and travel the world eventually getting married and having children.  Claire loves sports, especially kayaking and boating, and being with her friends and family.

Honorable Mention: Porter Strickland for his “Sanford Architecture” in pencil. He attends Sanford MS where Ms Katie Golnik is her teacher. Porter lives with his mom and dad and has an energetic Golden Retriever named Ranger. He is very active playing football and basketball and likes to go places and explore with his friends in the woods and forest behind their neighborhood.  Porter has gone to Europe on vacation and takes an interest in his studies with good grades.

Thank you to all for those students who submitted an entry and  especially to the teachers who take so much time and dedication to see these young artists flourish.
