Historic-Style Lampposts

A historic-style lampposts program, begun in 2001 in a partnership with the City of Sanford and later sponsored solely by the Trust, continues to spread light throughout the Historic District.  As founding member Helen Hickey puts it, “The trust provided the spark that was needed to reinvigorate our community.” The original agreement between the Trust and homeowners stated that The Sanford Historic Trust would provide the pole, the City of Sanford would install it and the Homeowners would be responsible for maintenance moving forward. Over the years the project has withstood time and still represents a collaboration like no other between local government, non-profit, and homeowners.

The Trust supports this project today by ensuring homeowners can maintain these lamp posts by providing replacement bulbs, contributing to electrical repair costs as needed and organizing the re-painting of the existing poles. New lamp posts are still being installed, in fact we purchased 15 new poles in 2025, 6 to replace existing damaged poles, and 9 to expand the project.
